Benjamin Asare has opened up about the struggles he faced before rising to become Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper.

The Hearts of Oak shot-stopper shared his story during an appearance on The Delay Show, revealing the different jobs he did while pursuing his football dream.

“During my primary school days, I sold polythene bags while studying. I also trained as a carpenter, a steel bender, and a bus conductor,” Asare said.

The 33-year-old explained that life was extremely difficult growing up, and he had to combine football with several jobs just to survive.

“Despite my football career, I still made time to do all of these things because I was a hustler and had to survive,” he added.

Asare’s rise has been one of the biggest stories in Ghana football over the past year.

The experienced goalkeeper made his Black Stars debut against Chad during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in March and has since established himself as Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper.

He has also enjoyed an impressive campaign with Hearts of Oak, keeping 15 clean sheets this season.
