Team Ghana finished their campaign in the just ended 24th African Athletics Championships without a single gold medal after a 5-day event at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.
Ghana finished 17th on the medal table with only 5 medals, 1 silver and 4 bronze despite hopes of a strong finish at home.
Ghana's only hope of securing a 6th medal and a possible gold also faded on the final day of the championships on Sunday, May 17, after team captain Joseph Paul Amoah finished 5th in the 200m final.
The women’s 4x400m relay team also narrowly missed out on a medal after finishing fourth, while the men’s 4x400m team struggled to keep pace and ended last with a time of 3:05.14.
Ghana’s medal haul included bronze medals in the men’s and women’s 4x100m relay events.
Alex Amankwah secured bronze in the men’s 800m, while Florence Agyemang also won bronze in the women’s 400m.
Esther Obenewaa delivered Ghana's biggest medal in the 24th African Athletics Championships with a silver medal in high jump.
South Africa topped the medal table with 18 medals, 9 gold, 3 silver, and 6 bronze.
Kenya and Ethiopia secured the second and third positions with 17 and 14 medals respectively.
