Ghana football legend Asamoah Gyan will be officially unveiled as "Ambassador for Ghana Football" by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) on Wednesday, May 20, 2026.
The ceremony will take place at the Pelican Hotel in Accra, citinewsroom.com reported on May 17, 2026.
The event is meant to honour Gyan’s contributions to the game and rally support for the Black Stars ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada this June.
“The former captain will lead promotional campaigns, fan engagements, and corporate partnership initiatives designed to unite Ghanaians behind the national team before the tournament,” the GFA said in a statement.
However, Gyan will represent the GFA at official meetings and help promote both the national teams and Colts football.
'I didn't get physical' - Laryea Kingston denies 2010 World Cup snub stories
He remains Ghana’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals in 109 appearances for the Black Stars.
Meanwhile, he is also Africa’s highest scorer at the World Cup with six goals, having played in Germany 2006, South Africa 2010, and Brazil 2014.
The former Sunderland striker made history in 2006 when he netted Ghana’s first-ever World Cup goal in a 2-0 win over the Czech Republic.
Four years later, he helped the team reach the quarterfinals in South Africa, scoring three goals. Despite the painful penalty miss against Uruguay in 2010, Gyan’s leadership and commitment have kept him highly respected in football circles.
The GFA expects the new role to boost fan engagement and national support as Ghana heads to another World Cup.
Gyan himself has been pushing youth development. In an interview on Channel One TV’s World Cup Central on May 8, he revealed new plans under the "Asamoah Gyan Foundation" to find and train young talent across Ghana.
The foundation will soon embark on a trip and, on return, launch a major project called The Art of Goal Scoring.
“The foundation will also unveil its academy projects in partnership with collaborators, alongside a tournament scheduled to take place after the upcoming World Cup,” he explained.
The initiative aims to provide young players with structured training and help develop the next generation of Ghanaian stars.
