A devastating fire outbreak at Suame Magazine Zone 18 near the garages in Kumasi has claimed the life of a 70-year-old woman and destroyed several properties, according to a citinewsroom.com report on May 17, 2026, citing the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).

According to the report, the deceased, identified as Bawama Naya, was reportedly trapped in the inferno during the early hours of Saturday, May 16, 2026.

Officials from the Ashanti Regional Command of the GNFS said the fire affected multiple properties, including wooden structures, metal containers, vehicles, and vehicle engines.

In a statement issued on Saturday, May 16, 2026, the Fire Service disclosed that the Breman Fire Station received a distress call at approximately 0322 GMT regarding a fire involving structures, vehicles, and spare parts within the area.

A joint firefighting team from the Breman and Komfo Anokye fire stations was immediately dispatched to the scene.

“Upon arrival, the fully developed fire had engulfed three wooden structures, three metal containers, four vehicles, and nine DAF vehicle engines,” the statement noted.

Firefighters employed both offensive and defensive firefighting strategies to contain the blaze. The fire was brought under control at about 0359 GMT and fully extinguished at 0451 GMT using water and foam.

The body of Bawama Naya was later handed over to officers from the Suame District Police Command for preservation and further investigations.

The GNFS also revealed that firefighters successfully salvaged three sprinter buses, one Smiling Benz bus, and one Opanka bus from the fire.

Authorities say investigations are underway to determine the cause of the outbreak.
