Traders operating at the 31st December Makola Market have appealed to the Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang and the First Lady, Lordina Mahama to stop their relocation from the market.
Speaking to the media during a protest march to the Jubilee House to petition President John Dramani Mahama on May 15, 2026, the traders said the proposed relocation exercise has created fear and uncertainty among hundreds of business owners who depend on the market for their daily livelihood.
“We are appealing to our mothers, the Vice President, and the First Lady, to intervene. If we are evicted, it will affect our livelihoods, our children’s education will also be affected and the repayment of loans we took to grow our business,” a trader lamented.

She also raised concerns over reports that new stores would allegedly be rented out in dollars, making them unaffordable for existing traders.
“Business activities have been slow. We heard they are going to build stores and rent them out in dollars, but we don’t have money to rent any. Please come to our aid,” she appealed.
The traders further warned that any forced relocation without proper arrangements could severely disrupt their businesses and worsen the economic difficulties many of them are already facing.
