Ghana’s hopes of winning gold in the men’s 4x100m relay at the African Senior Athletics Championships ended in disappointment after the host nation settled for bronze in a thrilling final in Accra on Friday, May 15, 2026.

After confidently booking a place in the final and speaking boldly about their ambitions, the Ghanaian quartet was unable to deliver the ultimate prize in front of the home crowd at the University of Ghana Stadium.

Côte d’Ivoire stormed to gold with a winning time of 38.52 seconds, producing a powerful performance to finish ahead of competitors.

Nigeria once again got the better of Ghana in a major relay showdown, claiming silver in 38.70 seconds after another strong display from the West African rivals.

Ghana crossed the line in third place with a time of 38.74 seconds, narrowly missing out on silver in a dramatic finish that had the stadium on its feet.

Botswana finished fourth in 38.98 seconds, while Kenya placed fifth with the same time.

Coming into the race, Joseph Paul Amoah had insisted Ghana’s target was “to win the ultimate,” with the team hoping to gain revenge on Nigeria after losing to them at the 2023 African Games in Accra.

Although the gold dream slipped away once again, the bronze medal still provided a positive moment for the host nation, adding to Ghana’s growing medal tally at the championships.

The race was one of the standout events of the evening, with all five teams pushing hard in an intense sprint battle from start to finish.
