Retired Ghanaian boxer, Ayitey Powers has expressed his frustrations with the ruling National Democratic Congress government, claiming he is being sidelined despite his support for the party in opposition.

Speaking at the Greater Accra Regional Police Headquarters during a CID invitation involving social commentator Nana Addo Nyame, the outspoken boxer lamented what he described as unfair treatment towards him and other people involved in boxing.

Ayitey Powers questioned why promotions linked to him allegedly face cancellation at the last minute, insisting such treatment would not happen to individuals connected to powerful figures.

“By me, Ayitey Powers, I’m nobody. I’m not the son of the president, so they can do me like that,” he said.

He also referenced Sharaf Mahama, suggesting authorities would react differently if an event associated with him was affected.

“If it’s Sharaf Mahama who is doing his promotion and it gets to that time, people will wake up and say because Bawubali is dead, they are going to cancel Sharaf Mahama’s promotion?” he questioned.

The boxer further highlighted the struggles of athletes in Ghana, mentioning former boxer Bastie Samir as an example of sportsmen facing hardship without support.

“Look at Bastie Samir. He doesn’t have anywhere to sleep. Nobody thinks about it,” Ayitey Powers stated.

According to him, he has repeatedly invested his own money into boxing promotions only for authorities to cancel his bouts.

“If me, I don’t go to school and I get my small money and put it into boxing, one day to my promotion NSA will just wake up and cancel my fight without telling me."

“Do you think the president doesn’t hear what I’m saying or what I’m going through? The president made his mind that he doesn’t care about anything,” he added.
