The National Security Monitoring and Evaluation Team has arrested several commercial drivers and their conductors (mates), for alleged unauthorised transport fare increases on the Kwame Nkrumah Circle to Kasoa route.
The arrests were made following numerous complaints from commuters who accused some transport operators of charging as much as GH₵20 for the journey without any official approval for a fare adjustment.
The incident sparked widespread frustration among passengers, many of whom questioned the sudden increase in fares.
In a viral video shared on X on Friday, May 15, 2026, members of the monitoring team were seen apprehending some of the drivers and their mates at various transport terminals.

The reported fare hikes caused confusion at several lorry stations, where heated arguments broke out between passengers and transport operators over the charges.
Some commuters were also left stranded after certain drivers allegedly refused to load passengers unless they agreed to pay the higher fares.
The operation forms part of ongoing efforts by the authorities to clamp down on unlawful fare increases and protect the public from exploitation by commercial transport operators.
Transport fares in Ghana are usually reviewed through consultations between transport unions and the government, with any approved changes publicly announced before they take effect.
