Ghana and Togo have elevated their customs cooperation from symbolic gestures to a daily operational alliance, a move poised to reshape trade security across West Africa.

During a high-level meeting in Accra, Ghana’s Customs Commissioner, Aaron Kanor, welcomed a Togolese delegation and declared that the two nations are “brothers united by blood, trade, and history.”

He stressed that the fight against smuggling can no longer be handled in isolation, noting that “if Togo sneezes, Ghana catches a cold. If Ghana blocks a route, smugglers try Togo. We must sneeze and heal together.”

The new framework centers on synchronized border operations which includes ncluding joint night patrols at the Aflao–Kodjoviakopé crossing, real-time intelligence sharing to eliminate transit fraud, and technological integration between Ghana’s ICUMS and Togo’s SYDAM systems to ensure seamless data flow.

This operational synergy is designed to dismantle criminal networks that exploit loopholes between the two countries.

Both Heads of State have mandated that customs cooperation must deliver on two fronts: maximizing revenue collection and accelerating the movement of goods.

Commissioner Kanor emphasized that the true measure of success will be traders’ preference for the Ghana–Togo corridor as a secure and efficient route, rather than bureaucratic milestones.

The meeting also highlighted the cultural and economic ties binding communities on both sides of the border.

Families trade daily across Aflao and Kodjoviakopé markets, often disregarding the political line that separates them.

“We are separated by a line drawn on a map, but our mothers buy from the same markets,” Kanor remarked, underscoring the human dimension of the partnership.

The delegation’s visit is expected to be reciprocated in Lomé, paving the way for a daily cooperation framework that could redefine how West African neighbors safeguard trade, revenue, and regional security.
