Alex Amankwah delivered another podium finish for Team Ghana after clinching bronze in the men’s 800m final at the African Senior Athletics Championships in Accra.
The Ghanaian middle-distance runner produced a determined performance on Thursday, May 14, 2026, to finish third in a tightly contested race at the University of Ghana Stadium.
Amankwah crossed the line in 1:46.18 to secure Ghana’s second medal of the championships and spark celebrations among the home fans.
Kenya’s Kelvin Kimtai claimed gold after finishing first in 1:45.47, while Morocco’s Imad Bouchejra took silver with a time of 1:45.62.

The race went down to the wire as Amankwah had to hold off a late challenge from Algeria’s Mohammed Ali Gouaned, who narrowly missed the podium after finishing fourth in 1:46.19, just one hundredth of a second behind the Ghanaian.
The bronze medal adds to Ghana’s growing medal tally at the championships after Florence Agyemang earlier secured bronze in the women’s 400m final.
