The Majority Chief Whip and Member of Parliament for South Dayi, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, has revealed that Parliament, together with key state institutions have stepped in following the detention of the Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North in the Netherlands.
He said the incident, which occurred on Sunday, May 10, 2026, was immediately brought to the attention of parliamentary leadership after he was informed of it earlier that morning.

According to him, the matter was first escalated within Parliament before the Majority Leader contacted authorities in the Netherlands to establish the circumstances leading to the MP’s detention.
Speaking on ChannelOne TV’s The Point of View on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, Dafeamekpor said the response has since widened to include the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ghana’s Embassy in The Hague, the Attorney General’s Department, the Speaker of Parliament, and the Clerk to Parliament.
“So, I was the first person he called and told me about the issue. So, quickly I had to also refer the issue to my principals. So, eventually I got my leader, who was himself on transit at Heathrow in London, so he had to fly to Schiphol to go and engage him for about 2 or 3 hours to understand the issues.
“Since then we have brought in the foreign minister, (and) we brought in our ambassador to the Hague,” he said.
He explained that the Attorney General’s involvement has been necessary due to legal issues connected to the Rome Statute and concerns surrounding the use of the MP’s diplomatic passport.
“We brought in the Attorney General because he has to deal with some legal issues in terms of the statute of Rome, because he's traveling on a diplomatic passport. The Speaker himself has been brought in,” he explained.
Dafeamekpor further revealed that Parliament has arranged legal representation for the detained lawmaker, adding that a Ghanaian lawyer based in The Hague is currently working on the case.
“So, we've coordinated this matter very well. We have a lawyer for him now. The lawyer is a Ghanaian based in the Hague. He qualified in Hague so he practices there, so he's dealing with the issues,” he disclosed.
He said discussions and consultations have been ongoing since Sunday, May 10, 2026, with continuous engagement among diplomatic and legal teams to secure a resolution.
According to him, Parliament has coordinated all relevant institutions to ensure a structured response to the situation.
He also assured that the detained MP is safe and in good condition.
Dafeamekpor noted that although the trip was private, the use of a diplomatic passport has made the matter one requiring urgent state and parliamentary attention.
He added that diplomatic and legal processes are ongoing as authorities work to resolve the matter.
“It's a private trip, I must say, but he's traveling on our diplomatic passport. So, that's why Parliament is so concerned in dealing with the issues, but we want to urge all the media houses not to be throwing in things that haven't been confirmed because even the warrant for his arrest, we have yet to have the authenticated copy.

“The prosecutor that has been appointed in Amsterdam to deal with the matter with the lawyer is yet to give those necessary documents to the lawyer and for our consideration,” he said.
