The government, through the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, on May 12, 2026, swore into office members of the Executive Committee of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in Ghana.
The newly inaugurated UNESCO executive committee is chaired by Rev. Fr. Daniel Kwadwo Lenwah, SVD, and includes Prof. Osman Tahidu Damba, Prof. Stephen A. Ayidiya, Prof. Eliasu Mumuni, Prof. Abigail Gura and Prof. Kodzo Gavua.
The other members of the committee are Prof. Ago Kwashi Macgranaky Quaye, Audrey Naana Abayena, Jamila Jakalia and Musah Abdallah.
In brief remarks, Haruna Iddrisu congratulated the members of the executive committee of UNESCO’s Ghana Commission.
He indicated that he had the strong conviction that they would be able to perform their task of enhancing Ghana’s education sector.
“We trust that you would work to promote quality and inclusive education for all, and in particular, support scientific research and innovation, preserve and promote Ghana's rich cultural heritage, and empower the youth through skills development and digital literacy,” he said.
The minister added that the committee also has the task of “strengthening partnerships for sustainable development and advancing the values of peace, tolerance and intercultural dialogue.”
The minister also took the opportunity to invite the Director-General of UNESCO, Dr Khaled El-Enany, to the 2026 Literacy Day Observation.
“More importantly for me, Ghana would observe 70 years of its independence next year. We have, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, extended an invitation to the Director-General of UNESCO to be part of Ghana's Literacy Day Observation next year as part of Ghana’s 70th anniversary,” he said.
