Broadcast Journalist, Paul Adom Otchere, made some interesting remarks in connection with a looming by-election in Asante Akim North months before the arrest of Kwame Ohene Frimpong, MP for the constituency.

In his remark, Paul Adom-Otchere suggested that the legislator was facing legal troubles abroad that could eventually lead to his detention; necessitating a by-election in the constituency.

Speaking on Metro TV’s Good Evening Ghana on September 2, 2025, Adom-Otchere disclosed that the independent MP, who unseated Andy Appiah-Kubi in the 2024 general election, was dealing with legal matters outside Ghana that could jeopardise his seat in Parliament.

According to him, the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) was already aware of the possibility of a by-election and understood the political implications it could carry.

He explained that Asante Akim North is historically considered a stronghold of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), making it difficult for the NDC to retain the seat if voters were required to return to the polls.

What MP OK Frimpong said about his reported arrest, fraud allegations in 2025

“Someone might say the NDC already has a two-thirds majority, so why were they so focused on Akwatia? I will tell you a secret. There could be another by-election pending in Asante Akim. The seat was won by an independent candidate who defeated Andy Appiah-Kubi,” Adom-Otchere stated.

He clarified that the possible by-election would not arise from the MP’s death, but rather from alleged legal complications.

“This potential by-election is not because the MP has passed on. He is a young man and very much alive by the grace of God. But there are legal matters, some outside Ghana’s jurisdiction, that could lead to such a situation,” he added.

Adom-Otchere’s comments have regained attention following reports that Frimpong had been detained at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol on May 12, 2026.

According to reports, the MP was held by Dutch authorities over allegations connected to an international investigation into suspected financial crimes, including money laundering and alleged romance scams involving an estimated US$32 million.
