Former Ghana captain, Asamoah Gyan has described the potential absence of Kudus Mohammed and Mohammed Salisu from the FIFA World Cup as a “huge blow” to the Black Stars.
Speaking in an interview with Citi Sports, Gyan expressed concern over the injuries to the two key players, stressing their importance to Ghana’s squad both in attack and defence.
According to the former striker, Kudus’ creativity and ability to produce moments of individual brilliance make him one of the team’s most influential players.
“It’s a huge blow for Ghana. Huge, huge, huge blow for Ghana,” Gyan said. “In every team you have that player that can do a lot of things when it comes to creativity and create chances. We are lacking that in the team and our focus was that he could do something special.”
Gyan also highlighted Salisu’s importance, particularly during set-piece situations, noting that the defender played a crucial role in Ghana’s recent performances during the qualifiers and friendly matches.
“And Salisu, you know, he’s a rock when it comes to set pieces. During the qualifications and the friendly games, we were scoring more goals through set pieces and he was more involved in it,” he added.
The former Black Stars captain urged the technical team to quickly begin searching for replacements if the duo are ruled out of the tournament.
“That two players that are injured now, it’s a huge blow to Ghana and we have to work on their replacements as soon as possible,” he stated.
