The Christian Council of Ghana (CCG) has thrown its support behind the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference in condemning acts of public nudity reportedly witnessed during the 2026 Karnival Kingdom Festival held between April 22 and 28, 2026.

In a media statement signed by its Chairman, Rt Rev Dr Lt Col BDK Agbeko, the Council described the incidents as deeply disturbing and contrary to Ghanaian laws and cultural values.

According to the CCG, the alleged acts of nudity violated Section 278 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), stressing that such conduct undermines public morality and erodes the moral fabric of Ghanaian society.

“The CCG aligns fully with the position of the Ghana Catholic Bishops' Conference regarding the deeply concerning events that occurred during the Karnival Kingdom Festival,” portions of the statement noted.

The Council also expressed concern over reports that some participants involved in the acts allegedly received police protection during the event.

It questioned the role played by state institutions responsible for maintaining law and order and backed calls by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference and Assin South MP, Rev John Ntim Fordjour, for a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the festival.

The Christian Council further called for scrutiny into the granting of permits for the festival as well as the deployment of security personnel to the event.

While acknowledging the importance of cultural exchange and international engagement, the Council maintained that foreign cultural expressions must not override Ghana’s laws, traditions, and accepted social norms.

The statement additionally urged public institutions tasked with safeguarding morality and enforcing the law to remain impartial and avoid shielding individuals or activities that contravene national laws.

The Council also called for non-interference in any investigations into the matter and appealed to stakeholders to allow due process to prevail without politicising the issue.

Among its recommendations, the CCG proposed: a thorough and independent investigation with findings made public; a review of event permitting procedures with clear public decency guidelines; accountability for any misuse of state resources, including police protection; and a national dialogue on acceptable boundaries for cultural expression in public spaces.
