Benjamin Azamati has withdrawn from the upcoming Confederation of African Athletics Senior Athletics Championships due to a groin injury, according to sources close to the athlete.

The continental championship is scheduled to take place from May 12 to May 17, 2026, with Benjamin Azamati widely regarded as one of Ghana’s strongest medal prospects.

His withdrawal comes just days after he helped Ghana’s 4x100m relay team qualify for the World Athletics Championships. Team Ghana secured qualification after finishing second at the World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, Botswana.

Teammate Abdul-Rasheed Saminu confirmed the injury during an interview on Citi FM’s Sports Panorama, revealing that Azamati competed despite discomfort during the relay event.

“He picked up a slight injury ahead of the race in Botswana. He sacrificed a lot for the team because we arrived late in Gaborone and he was already carrying the injury. I advised him to ice it and manage it properly,” Saminu said.

However, Saminu expressed confidence in the team’s strength despite Azamati’s absence.

“It will not affect the team. We still have strong options, and with Ibrahim Fuseini back in the squad, we are well covered,” he added.

Benjamin Azamati has been one of Ghana’s standout performers on the track in recent years, making his absence a significant setback for Team Ghana ahead of the championships.
