The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, brought humour and political symbolism to the inauguration of a 600-bed dormitory at Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC), Legon on Tuesday May 5, 2026.
The facility was donated by businessman and old student of the school, Ernest Ofori Sarpong, who currently serves as President of the PRESEC Old Boys Association.
Upon arrival, Haruna Iddrisu admitted feeling uneasy after noticing red and blue decorations, colours often associated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“When I first arrived and saw the colours of red and blue on the carpet, I felt very uncomfortable. So today, even if you didn’t ask me for the umbrella, I would have asked for this umbrella to equalize for our purposes,” he remarked.

He added that he was reminded by fellow dignitary Bryan Acheampong who is the Member of parliament for Abetifi that the occasion was not about political rivalry but about celebrating PRESEC’s achievements.
The minister praised the school’s leadership in academic excellence, highlighting its focus on science education as a foundation for Ghana’s future.
“PRESEC is not just an institution; you are leaders in academic excellence. What is remarkable is that you have chosen science, which is the future. That is where you are providing leadership, and you will continue to inspire many,” he said.
Haruna Iddrisu also paid tribute to Professor Michael Quaye former Speaker of Parliament , recalling his time as a “troublesome minority leader” in Parliament but acknowledging their collaboration on the Parliamentary Service Board’s HR Committee.
