Have there been very serious looks towards why the Medical Professionals could not help the patient? My concerns are if there were not available places to accommodate the patient and attend to him, why blame the Medical Professionals? Have there never been instances at the Police and the 37 Military Hospitals when Patients were not able to be taken care of because there were no places? Sometimes there are no beds, equipments etc? Such things happen almost always. Yes, such situations even happen in the Developed countries in the World.
I remember taking my 6 month Pregnant wife to the Dekalb Medical Center for treatment. She was diagnosed for having an Ectopic Pregnancy. The only Specialist who could attend to her situation was at the Emory Hospital undertaking a surgery. My wife was in very deep pains crying her lungs out. There were other four Medical Doctors there but none of them was prepared to take the risk of undertaking any such complicated surgery. We waited for about three and a half hours until the qualified Surgeon finished her surgery at the other Hospital and arrived to perform a surgery on my wife. Before the surgery, I was made to understand and sign that with the Surgery, I may lose my wife or the baby. How do you choose between two evils? I made the desperate decision to choose for my wife to be saved if I should make the Devil’s alternative. Two Doctors attended to my Pregnant wife and were able to save both my wife and the baby.
There was an instance at the GRADY Hospital where my friend’s who has a Specialist’s Medical Degree had to wait for over 14 hours without being attended to and had to get back home without any assistance because there was no qualified Medical Doctor to attend to her situation. She was given no medication to help calm her and had to go home to come the next day.
I have heard of situations where she arriving Medical Helicopter could not land on the Helipad because there was no landing Place for the Plane. The Helicopter had to hover around until there was a place for it to land. Medical Staff in the USA don’t take risks because of responsibilities and being sued. I wonder the number of Hospitals in Ghana that have Helipads. Let us accept that Medical Staff in Ghana will generally not fail to attend to Patients if the facilities, equipments and Medications are available. Most of our Hospitals Staff perform a lot to save Patients but sometimes the conditions at the Hospitals are just not feasible for Patients to be adequately taken care of. As we continue to grill the Medical Staff for not being considerate and we crucify them, we are getting into the situations where some Medical Doctors and Nurses will not be prepared to give emergency care to Patients who need assistance. Many Patients are going to suffer in pains and die. Can we then blame such Staff for not helping Patients because they have not been trained to do that? Let us be considerate and respectful to our Nurses and Doctors who sacrifice to take the risks of taking care of our Patients in desperate needs.

Well said.
If the said victim had been in the remote part of this country, would there have been this much noise and a call for an investigation?
The main person who should be blamed is the hit and run driver and not the medical personnels. The doctors could have done their best, yet he could still die. What if that good Samaritan had left him where he was knocked down?
What is very important and necessary at the moment is the way forward so as avoid all these unfortunate occurrences in the future.
Mr. MP's remarks is very unfortunate. As Ghanaians we are interconnected and interrelated, so if these doctors were his children, would he address them that way? Hey! Let's be guided by the fact that we are one nation with a common destiny.
Two mistakes do not make a right.
They should be cautioned of their roles in relation to the bond they might signed as being ready to save lives to the best of their abilities, failure of which probably certain measures will taken against them based on their ethics, rules and regulations.
Resetting includes our attitudes, comments, etc.

@Gabriel Narh@Labadi. Thanks for putting sense to that senseless beast who wants to justify the action/inaction of those irresponsible doctors/nurses. His piece doesn't make any iota of sense. The medical profession is one of, if not the most highly regulated profession with the highest ethics. There are protocols for handling emergency cases even if your facility has no space to handle more cases. They needed to have created a temporary space to stabilize the patient, but not to outrightly tell them there is no space to accommodate them when the patient was in a critical state.

It was not appropriate and respectful for the MP to speak out like he reasons from his anus. As an MP, he should exercise respect, diplomacy and wisdom. Some of our Medical Professionals have not been trained to take care of some ailments. There are times when even equipments and the requisite medications might not be available but the Medical Professionals make provisions to help take care of Patients. Can Medical Professionals be fired if there is the claim that there are no facilities available to treat some ailments? Let us appreciate the efforts our Medical Professionals put in and the number of hours they work without being paid. When was the last time that newly trained and qualified Nurses in Ghana paid appropriately and at the right time?
Our Medical Professionals have already been trained and certified and can pick up employment at many places in the Middle East, Africa, and the Developed Western Countries. It takes a long time, and it is very expensive to train them. Don’t let us provoke them to leave for Greener Pastures and leave our sick ones unattended. As long as they work in other countries as foreigners, they will be appropriately paid, paid regularly and respected. All they need is to spend a year to learn the French language and Medical Terminologies and our neighboring Francophone countries are ready to employ them and pay them in US Dollars.
The MP is jabbering rubbish and will be rushed to Europe, Canada, and the USA as A Plus has been rushed for treatment outside the country. Don’t our Politicians get rushed to South Africa for Medical Treatments? Will Ghana do that for KOFI BROKEMAN like me? Treat our Medical Care Professionals with respect.

Okay, the Medical Professionals who are specialists have been trained for years, qualified, and certified to treat some ailments. If they are not taken good care of and not paid regularly, they can leave for Greener Pastures. Who loses in the end.
I was trained for free at a University in Ghana where I was properly fed three times daily, given three snacks a day, and given a free single room accommodation. We had Porters and Cleaners for our rooms. When I was not taken care of and paid appropriately, I left over three decades ago to seek better opportunities in Western Europe, Canada and the USA where I am taken care of respectfully and don’t need to find out when my next salary will come as our Nurses and Teachers experience now. So, who is losing. I have fully retired with all my benefits including my 401K. I don’t think I shall be financially poor if I take care of myself. My immediate family lives in Canada and USA. I only come to Ghana just to while away the time and acquaint with my old friends. I have nothing to lose now. If our Professionals that have been fully trained and Certified leave the country, it is Ghana that loses.

I support Dr Nawani for this directive because some doctors in Ghana are bluffing and using threats to avoid accountability. They keep lying to the ordinary citizens that they have better offers in abroad to work in the healthcare sector, but they often forget to tell people that most of the doctors here will never attend to patients one on one in most jurisdictions. Most of the African trained doctors are usually given roles different from administering services to patients. Most of the Ghana trained nurses go out there to work in nursing homes where they care for the elderly. I was amazed when I took my younger sister to korlebu for medical care. The doctor who attended to my sister spent most of his time talking on the phone to solve his domestic problems. One patient could spend about 45minutes with him and you can imagine the number of people in line waiting. We spent all day there and I have come to understand how the system works in Ghana. Which doctor in America will be on phone for about half of the time he or she is attending to a patient? Black people attitude stinks and we aren’t going to change anytime soon.

Ghana is already producing a lot of doctors at a huge cost to the state, there is no need increasing the number. Averagely about 70% of our trained doctors migrate abroad after 5yrs of training which means we are not getting the benefits. The country shd categorise our doctors we train into 2 groups. Those who want to benefit from Govt support shd sign a bond to serve the country for some period, those who want to migrate soon after graduating shd pay the full market price of training( about $7,000/yr). The state will make a lot of money from this arrangement and use it to improve the conditions of service of those who will remain in the country.

@Sua Nyansa, the ruling govt has enough majority in parliament to enact a law or an act banning nurses, doctors etc from ever going on strike. It exists in certain European countries. And, they can even make it stricter by refusing to issue passports to doctors from travelling abroad if they have not served Ghana for say 15 or 20 years after graduation. After all, there is no law anywhere in the world that says ,a govt is legally obliged to issue a passport to anyone. I have done my checks, and, yes, that is right. Enough of the molly coddling.
Singapore does not entertain such nonsense! Dwe ka kra, wai!
Legal Restrictions: Under Singapore's Criminal Law (Temporary Provisions) Act, workers in essential services—which includes public health services—must provide at least 14 days' notice before striking.Permit Required: A strike is illegal unless a permit is obtained from the government. No Organized Union: There is no specialized union for doctors in Singapore that organizes strikes, making collective industrial action highly unlikely.Professional Ethics: The medical profession in Singapore emphasizes patient care, and a strike is viewed as unethical due to the potential harm to patients. While doctors in other countries, such as the UK, may strike, the regulatory and industrial relations environment in Singapore makes such actions unlikely.

anybody.. That is the point. You can cry, moan whinge as much as you like. The fact remains the same whether in America, UK, Germany ,Ghana etc. There is no specific law that binds any govt anywhere in tne world to issue a passport to anyone . These are some of the rare legal technicalities that a lot of people are simply not aware of, including Agyena Karikari. Educate yourself with thus info and cut your crap. The govt of Ghana can easily do that and there is 4uck all the doctors can do about it. That is a fact. Now, read...
Strictly speaking, governments are generally not legally obliged to issue passports to citizens simply because they applied. While citizens have a right to nationality, the issuance of a passport is typically an administrative act, not an automatic legal right, and can be denied or withdrawn under specific circumstances.

The MP is exhibiting a typical Northern mentality. It is these same people who will start blaming southerners when there is mass exodus of doctors to abroad. Even in Russia where this ignorant MP studied, there are standards for medical professionals to operate within. Even you as a an MP take huge allowances because people come to you to beg for money. If you increase the work load of a person, you over-stretch them and they will finally break down. I started teaching in Northern Ghana some 30 years ago. Back then, the North lacked science teachers and so the few of us with science background were overloaded. With a 35 period a week and a student population of about four hundred and fifty, I saw this as very unbearable. I complained to the headmaster and all he could say was you are young and energetic with fresh blood. When I tried to engage my colleagues, one told me he is from the North and so he is trying to help his people and the other told me his life is better than the labourers of the school. As for me, I sought a transfer to another school where my student population was fifty-five and weekly period of eighteen yet I was taking the same salary. At the end of the day, one of my colleagues died of stress and the other is currently suffering stroke. So Mr MP, think well and stop that awkward mentality that is impoverishing your people. Glory be to God.

What is northern mentality? So because you think doctors can run to other countries, they shouldn't be punished when they violate the ethics of their profession? For your information, don't think is easy to go and practice in another country without certifying all the requirements. Some of them even end up as medical record keepers. Ask the number of batches who completed medical school and are home waiting for government employment. Let them establish their own clinics and do what they want.
Is it only the north that doctors refuse posting? You are a real demon and no wonder your name says so. Have northerners ever blamed southerners when doctors refuse postings. Kwasia like you. If you don't have anything sensible to say better keep that your stinking mouth shut. The issue at hand has nothing to do with ethnicity or party, but you refused to use your coconut head to reason and decided to type this senseless message. In any case, the young man who met his untimely death because of those irresponsble doctors and nurses, was he a northerner? The fact is it could happen to anybody including yourself if you care to know. Do you know the day you can find yourself in the north, fall sick and be rushed to the hospital and there's no doctor to care for you? You be there typing stupid things and insulting norrherners.

Hahahaha. I just like your comments. Some Ghanaians don’t know and understand the intricacies involved in becoming a Medical Doctor. Many of those we call Medical Doctors will never be allowed to practice on their own in Canada, USA and the Western World.
Trained Surgeons are not allowed to practice on their own until they have practiced on attachment to qualified and very experienced Physicians for over five years. What about the situation in Ghana. Medical Doctors start to practice on their own less than 6 months after Graduation from the Medical university
I worked at the Center for Disease Control where a fully trained Surgeon whose son was my friend was not allowed to perform surgery by herself until after four years of attachment to a fully qualified and Certified Surgeon. The day she was allowed to practice on her own, she fasted and prayed for three days. My daughter is specializing in Dental Implant after her Dental College education but has not been allowed to practice on her own without supervision. The Medical Doctor’s course is not easy so let us treat and respect them well so that we can retain them:

Teachers, nurses, doctors etc. went on strike and all that NDC appointees could say was, sack the teachers and employ NDC people at home (carpenters and masons to teach science, accounting etc). Others said sack all the doctors and employ Cuban doctors. What is wrong with NDC and its unpalatable comments. Is this MP another Awusi or Linda Ocloo? Is he another Asiedu Nketia or Hannah Bissiw etc, etc , etc ? Oh ! NDC , we are disappointed in you with your foul language, your language stinks!!!.

There the newsman goes again with the screaming and misleading headline as if the MP does not respect doctors. And knowing the Ghanaian who will not read the whole article but will conclude, he simply draws the ire of such persons against people with such objective stance. Indeed the MP was spot on when he said doctors who are not ready to give their all or not to follow ethical standards can resign. After all what is the use of a doctor who fails to abide by the basic hippocratic oath by which doctors vow to give of their best to save human lives. If you lose a relation in the hands of such reckless doctors, you will best appreciate what the MP is saying. This is not an attack or a way to demean the essence of doctors. And we must do away with this ndc/npp nonsense in such topical national issues. There are very good and committed doctors and it is the laissez faire ones who are being told to get out of the said medical profession for better and committed ones to take their place. I support this MP in full. But ghanweb, please learn to do away with such sensational headlines

Ghanaians are tired of these unprofessional medical doctors in our hospitals. Their work attitudes and ethics are very unprofessional and disappointing. In the US, if there's an emergency in any situation and you don't respond as a medical doctor, you will be fired or dismissed from the medical profession. Medical negligence is also investigated and any. medical doctor found guilty is always punished or dismissed in the USA. But in Ghana, medical doctors are never punished or dismissed for their medical negligence and because of that, medical doctors in Ghana are always misbehaving and acting unprofessionally.

A colleague and I searched the length and breadth of Tamale looking for anti-venom for patient who was ‘spitting out blood’ and bleeding profusely after a snake bite. The hospital did not have that medication and that was the only missing piece in the treatment. Assuming another patient was brought in with similar conditions, would you expect my colleagues and I to admit the patient and roam the streets of Tamale again to look for the key ingredient needed for treatment? My unit was meant to be the emergency department of the hospital. It was just a name ascribed to a four walled space with a roof. It’s extremely sad someone should die but hammering on medical negligence without addressing the ɔsono in the room indicates that the terrible healthcare system in Ghana has missed the opportunity to receive the life saving surgery it needs

Others are leaving already, if the MP cares to know. They have resigned. Korle-Bu in particular is already suffering from brain drain. Highly skilled nurses and doctors are leaving due to being stretched. Should there be an issue related to system failures they always look for someone to blame. How can two nurses be the only people taking care of 10-14 very sick patients per shift? They will break down. How can a few doctors be handling multiple critical emergencies at the same time, you will break down.
