Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Ghana’s Vice President, has sent warm words of encouragement to the thousands of young students sitting for this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

More than 620,000 candidates across the country began their exams on Monday, May 4, 2026.

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is conducting the nationwide test, which will run until May 11, 2026, in 20,395 participating schools.

In a statement issued from her office on the first day of the exams, the Vice President expressed her belief in the students’ readiness.

“The Vice President is confident that all candidates will give off their very best after years of effort, discipline, and preparation,” the statement said.

She urged the candidates to stay focused and face the papers with a positive spirit.

“All candidates should approach the examination with confidence, honesty and determination,” the statement added.

Professor Opoku-Agyemang also took a moment to appreciate the many people who have supported the students along the way.

She commended the Ghana Education Service, teachers, parents, and all other stakeholders for their dedication and hard work in preparing the children for this important milestone.

At the same time, she called on supervisors, invigilators, and school authorities to ensure the exams are conducted with complete fairness and transparency.

Maintaining integrity throughout the process, she noted, remains crucial for producing credible results that every candidate can be proud of.
