Professor Kwaku Tete Nicholas Dayie of the Department of Medical Microbiology, University of Ghana Medical School (UGMS), has appealed to donors to help resource the Ghana Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Surveillance System (GASS).
He explained that he led the charge to establish the Ghana AMR Surveillance System, which analyzes data from laboratories across the country to address antimicrobial resistance.
However, the professor lamented that progress has been slow due to a lack of resources for recruiting personnel, visiting sites, and conducting advocacy efforts.

Speaking at a public lecture at the UG Great Hall on April 30, 2026, on the topic “When Microbes Speak and Data Appear Inconsistent, Are We Witnessing Falsehood or Truth?” Prof Tete called for more support from donors to strengthen the fight against antimicrobial resistance.
“Ghana has developed a very unique surveillance system. Data from district-level laboratories are aggregated at the national level, and at the click of a button, you can analyze this data. Ghana has made tremendous efforts to contain antimicrobial resistance.
"The only challenge is that the pace is very slow. In the AMR sector, we need resources to meet regularly, visit sites for training, and sustain our work. I am using this platform to advocate that if there is any donor willing to help the Ministry of Health keep this association active, please come to our aid. We can achieve much more than we have done,” he said.
He further highlighted some of his achievements, saying:
“Ghana has developed an integrated strategy for the surveillance of antimicrobial resistance, use, and consumption, as well as residues, using a One Health approach.
"Ghana has also developed guidelines and protocols for antimicrobial resistance detection in the environmental sector.
"In addition, integrated standard operating procedures have been established, along with a laboratory quality manual and a laboratory safety manual for antimicrobial resistance surveillance. In all these efforts, I have been privileged—highly privileged—to contribute to their development.”
