A family reportedly rushed to settle outstanding medical bills for their relative at hospital after being informed that he had died, only to arrive and discover that he was alive, following an alleged prank orchestrated by some nurses to prompt payment.

The incident, which has sparked drama and confusion, occurred at Kwahu Nkwatia Government Hospital in the Kwahu East Constituency of the Eastern Region.

According to Eric Obeng Boateng, Eastern Regional Correspondent of GhanaWeb, the issue revolves around a middle-aged man identified as Mr Ketekra, who had been receiving treatment at the facility for more than three weeks.

During this period, his family allegedly failed to visit him or respond to repeated calls from the hospital to settle his medical bills.

Eric explained that nurses at the facility had been taking care of the patient and covering his expenses, including feeding.

Frustrated by the family’s lack of response, they reportedly devised a plan with Mr Ketekra to prank his relatives by informing them that he had died, in order to prompt them to come to the hospital.

The nurses allegedly visited the family home to deliver the false news. Upon hearing of his supposed death, the family members broke down in tears and rushed to the hospital dressed in mourning attire to take custody of the body for burial.

Upon arrival, they were asked to settle all outstanding medical bills before the body could be released to them.

A voice in a viral video capturing the incident narrated, “Mr Ketekra from Hweehwee in Kwahu has been sick for the past three weeks and the hospital has been calling his family during this period but they refused to come and assist him.

“The nurses took responsibility for his bills, so they planned with the patient to prank the family. When the family heard that he had died, they mobilized themselves and came to the hospital in funeral attire to take the body. They were asked to pay the medical bills before the body would be released. After settling the bills, they realized that he was not dead but alive.”

After the family paid all the medical expenses, they were reportedly shocked when the nurses led them to Mr Ketekra, who was alive, sitting on his hospital bed and drinking malt.

The incident triggered confusion and tension between the family and the nurses at the hospital.

In the viral video, one family member, who identified himself as a direct brother of Mr Ketekra, denied claims that the family had abandoned him, stating, “We have never abandoned him here.”
