President John Dramani Mahama has praised workers of Ghana’s main power generation hub at the May Day celebration for working towards a successful restoration of operations at the Akosombo Hydroelectric Dam, following a recent fire incident that disrupted electricity supply across the country.
Addressing workers at the 2026 May Day celebration held under the theme 'Pivoting to Gross Jobs and Sustainable Livelihoods, Resetting Ghana Beyond Macroeconomic Stability,' at the Jackson Park on May 1, President Mahama disclosed that engineers had successfully restored the facility.
“Just yesterday, I was in Akosombo to inspect the damage at the Volta River Authority (VRA) Electricity Generation Station following the devastating fire in the switchyard control room. I know many of you are concerned about the disruptions to electricity supply, but I bring good news,” he said.

According to him, engineers from the Ghana Grid Company and the Volta River Authority (VRA) worked together to bypass the damaged control system and restart all six turbines at the plant.
“As of last night, the Akosombo Hydroelectric Dam is fully operational,” he announced, to applauses from the crowd.
President Mahama commended the engineers for their swift response and technical expertise, describing them as a testament to the value of Ghanaian workers.
“These engineers are a living testament to the fact that Ghanaian workers are the nation’s most valuable assets,” he said.
