The Minister of Energy, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced that an additional unit at the Akosombo Dam has been successfully restored to operation.

In a Facebook post on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, he stated that; “At 9:09 pm, the fourth unit at Akosombo Dam was successfully brought into operation,” describing the milestone as “an encouraging step that strengthens power generation.”

This development comes at a critical time, as Ghana’s power system has been under strain, with recent outages in Accra and other areas linked to technical faults and rising demand.

The Akosombo Dam remains the backbone of the country’s electricity generation mix, supplying a significant share of national power through its hydroelectric turbines.

The minister credited engineers and technical teams for their dedication, noting that the restoration reflects their expertise and commitment.

Any improvement in operational capacity is seen as vital to stabilizing supply and reducing disruptions. The fourth unit is expected to ease pressure on the national grid, particularly as demand continues to climb.

Authorities have pointed to increased consumption and infrastructure constraints, including overloaded transformers, as key contributors to intermittent outages.

While the minister did not disclose the exact megawatt contribution of the restored unit, the move is expected to provide relief to households and businesses that have endured erratic power supply in recent days.
