The Minority in Parliament has called for accountability from the Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, insisting that Ghana’s persistent power challenges must be addressed at the highest level.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Pulse, the Member of Parliament for Oforikrom, Michael Kwasi Aidoo, questioned why leadership shake-ups have largely targeted officials at the operational level, while the sector’s head remains in office.
Why a 'dumsor' timetable cannot be published - Energy Minister explains
“If you remove the MD of GRIDCo and even direct supply at ECG, then why not you? Because the buck stops at the top,” he said.
His comments come in the wake of a directive by the Minister asking the CEO of Ghana Grid Company Limited, Ing Mark Awuah Baah, to step aside following investigations into the fire outbreak at the Akosombo Power Control Centre, an incident that has disrupted electricity supply in several parts of the country.
But for Aidoo, the issue goes beyond dismissals.
He argues that beneath the outages are deeper, unresolved problems ranging from fuel supply constraints to mounting debts owed to Independent Power Producers (IPPs), all of which continue to strain the system.
He described the government’s approach as one of “desperation and deflection”, insisting that fixing Ghana’s power crisis will take more than reshuffling officials it will require confronting the structural and financial realities at the heart of the energy sector.
