Ghanaian transgender musician and activist, Angel Maxine, has issued a statement clarifying why she publicly referred to Rev John Ntim Fordjour, Member of Parliament for Assin South, as her partner.

The controversy stems from videos posted by Maxine earlier this month, in which she mentioned the MP in connection with Ghana’s controversial anti-LGBTQ+ Bill.

The Bill, reintroduced in Parliament this year, seeks to criminalise expressions of affection, advocacy and support for queer people, while also imposing obligations on citizens to report suspected LGBTQ+ individuals, including family members.

In her statement on April 28, 2026, Maxine explained that her reference to Rev Fordjour was intended to highlight the dangers of false reporting and suspicion under such a law.

“My purpose was to press the point that false reporting, public suspicion and the mob-like justice that animates the Bill put everyone at risk,” she said.

She argued that the MP’s swift legal response to her claim demonstrates the very risks ordinary queer people face under the proposed legislation.

“If a public allegation can cause this level of concern to a Member of Parliament with visibility, influence and access to lawyers, then one must imagine what the same culture of suspicion will do to ordinary queer people who have no protection,” Maxine noted.

The musician further invited Rev Fordjour to reflect on the broader implications of the Bill and engage in an open conversation about love, dignity and respect for all citizens, regardless of sexual orientation.

Maxine confirmed that she has instructed her lawyers to formally respond to the MP’s legal team, while reiterating her call for dialogue.
