President John Dramani Mahama has revealed that a "patriotic" Ghanaian businessman is personally funding the remodelling and refurbishment of the VVIP lounge at the Accra International Airport (AIA).
According to him, the gesture represents a strong example of private sector support for national development.
Speaking during the sod-cutting ceremony for the interconnecting concourse at the airport on Monday, April 27, 2026, the President said the businessman is undertaking the project at no cost to the government, with the work estimated at nearly $2 million.

“When we visited the lounge, I told him that when he is finished, we will give him a lifetime membership to that lounge. He can use it until death do us part,” President Mahama said to applause.
Although President Mahama did not disclose the identity of the businessman, he described him as a "patriotic citizen" and commended the initiative as the kind of partnership the government is relying on to develop Ghana’s aviation infrastructure.
The remarks were made as the President outlined plans to expand the airport, including the construction of a new concourse linking Terminal 2 and Terminal 3, the repurposing of Terminal 2 to handle both domestic and international flights, and the development of a seven-storey multi-purpose car park with hotel, retail and conference facilities.
President Mahama said achieving Ghana’s ambition of becoming West Africa’s leading aviation hub will depend on strong collaboration between government, regulators, operators and private sector players.
“I urge all stakeholders to play their respective roles with diligence and urgency,” he said.
