The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has instructed the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission to recall its earlier correspondence on post-retirement contracts for senior academic staff in public universities.
The directive affects letters issued on September 30 and October 1, 2025.
The move comes after a meeting between the Minister and the leadership of the University Teachers Association of Ghana, who raised concerns about the communication and its implications.
In a statement released on Monday, April 27, 2026, and signed by the Minister’s Press Secretary, Hashmin Mohammed, the Ministry explained that the decision is to allow for broader stakeholder engagement before any final determination is made.
It added that the step is intended to ensure that policies impacting the tertiary education sector are thoroughly assessed and agreed upon through consensus.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to a consultative and inclusive approach in addressing matters within higher education.
“The decision has been taken pending further consultations with relevant stakeholders to ensure that any policy direction in this regard reflects broad consensus, promotes institutional sustainability, and serves the best interests of Ghana’s tertiary education sector,” the statement said.
