The former Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rev J.O.Y. Mante, has cautioned the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Dr Mary Awusi, “not to allow her eyes to go above her eyebrows,” urging humility and restraint in responding to criticisms related to illegal mining (galamsey).
Speaking on the theme of unity at the Victory Presbyterian Church Fafraha on Sunday 26th April 20256 Rev Mante stressed that it is inappropriate for a public official to caution or threaten individuals simply for expressing concerns about the destructive impact of galamsey on the nation.
He further declared that the church and its leaders will not be intimidated.
“Tell that woman we are not afraid of her. This is not about political parties. Just as the Pope has said they are not afraid of Trump’s administration, we are not afraid of any political party—whether under Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo or John Dramani Mahama. We cannot sit and allow galamsey to continue. We cannot allow our children to die early because of galamsey. It is evil,” he stated.
Rev. Mante warned that suppressing people’s right to speak on issues of national importance does not attract divine blessings.
He emphasised that the church must be regarded as a divine institution and not treated like any ordinary group, noting that unity remains a key pillar for God’s blessings.
He urged Christians to uphold the teachings and values of Jesus Christ, remain humble in their success, and use their gifts for the service of God and the advancement of the church.
Background
Rev Mante’s comments follow recent remarks by Dr Mary Awusi during a one-on-one interview on Accra FM, where she reportedly issued strong warnings to a respected religious leader who had criticised the government’s handling of the galamsey menace.
Her comments have since sparked public debate, with sections of the public raising concerns about the tone of engagement on a matter widely regarded as a national crisis.
