For over five decades, Mona Captan has stood as a symbol of excellence, endurance, and quiet dominance in Ghanaian golf.

Her journey, which began almost by accident, has evolved into one of the most remarkable sporting careers the country has ever witnessed.

Born to a Lebanese father and a Ghanaian mother from Keta in the Volta Region, Captan’s introduction to the game came in the mid-1970s while she was a student around Achimota.

A simple morning jog past the Achimota Golf Club changed everything. Drawn by the calm beauty of the course and the precision the sport demanded, her curiosity quickly turned into commitment.

“I think it’s by grace. I didn’t know I would be a golfer to this day. I started this game when I was in fourth form, and within six months, I got interested,” she recalled in an interview with Kafui Dey.

That early spark soon became an obsession. When her mentor traveled to Obuasi in 1975, she followed, marking the true beginning of her journey. What separated Captan from the rest was not just talent, but relentless discipline.

“Every day when I wake up, I hit 300 balls. In the afternoon, I’ll hit about 200. From there, I started winning tournaments,” she added.

Her first victory came in Obuasi in a unique competition known as the “Gaslight” tournament, where players aimed at a lamp positioned on a hill. She struck it perfectly and announced her arrival.

“The first tournament I won is called Gaslight. Obuasi is a hilly place so they put a lamp at the top. So you will hit the ball and try to hit that lamp. My first tournament, I hit that lamp and at the end of the day, I was the winner,” Captan explained.

From that moment, she knew there was no looking back.

Captan has since competed in over 850 tournaments and amassed more than 600 trophies across Ghana, Africa, Europe, and the United States - an unmatched record.

Her excellence earned her multiple honours, including two SWAG Sportswoman of the Year awards in 1996 and 1999 and a Millennium Award from the Ghana Golf Association.

More than 50 years on, she is still playing, not just as a competitor, but as a living legacy.
