Court documents filed by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) show that the Council of State member, Gabriel Tanko Kwamigah-Atokple, who is being investigated over allegations of gold trade fraud, was not declared wanted by the office.
In the said document, which was an affidavit opposing a motion to injunct the investigation, it was indicated that neither the directors of his company, Sesi-Edem Company Limited, nor he was declared wanted by EOCO.
EOCO explained that if the accused persons had been declared wanted, they would have appeared on its official wanted notice, which was not the case.
“No formal ‘wanted’ notice has ever been issued or published by the Respondent against the Applicant or its directors in the dedicated WANTED PERSONS section of the EOCO website, where it publishes persons officially declared wanted by the Respondent,” parts of the court document read.
The office also clarified that its statements on the investigation do not amount to a wanted notice and were only a reaction to public pronouncements on the matter.
“The only public statement was the general press release dated March 30, 2026, which was issued before the ex-parte interim injunction and which did not constitute a formal wanted declaration but a response to certain media discussions on the matter. The continued visibility of this pre-existing press release does not amount to a fresh declaration or maintenance of the Applicant as wanted, as the Applicant has never been declared wanted officially by the Respondent,” it added.
EOCO, in one of its statements, which was a reaction to a statement issued by the Volta Regional House of Chiefs on Friday, April 9, 2026, stated that the Council of State member and his company, Sesi-Edem Company Ltd, are being investigated over allegations of gold fraud.
It said that all attempts to get Dr Kwamigah-Atokple, who it said was a former associate of Nana Appiah Mensah (aka NAM1) and a staff member of Menzgold Ltd, to assist with the investigation since 2025 have proven futile.
“EOCO is handling three petitions against the suspect, Dr Gabriel Tanko Kwamigah-Atokple, and his SESI-EDEM Company. All petitions border on allegations of gold fraud and appear to follow the same pattern of alleged fraud. Contrary to several misleading public statements, EOCO wishes to assure the general public that the Office stands firm and is conducting its work perfectly within its mandate and according to law.
The Office believes that what is currently unfolding is rather a case of the promoters of SESI-EDEM Company believing and acting as if they are above the law, whilst building a coalition to actively obstruct investigations and justice. Since November 2025, the Office has accorded the suspect and his company the opportunity to come and prove their innocence of the alleged crimes. They have, rather unfortunately, refused to submit to the investigations and are seeking to use politics, tradition and a media campaign as a refuge,” parts of the statement issued by EOCO read.
