The Government of Ghana has summoned the South African High Commissioner, Thando Dalamba, over reported xenophobic attacks targeting Ghanaians living in South Africa.
The move follows growing concerns over the safety and security of Ghanaian nationals amid reports of violence and intimidation in parts of the country.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the meeting with the envoy was to formally register Ghana’s “strong concern” following viral videos and reports of intimidation and harassment against foreigners.

One widely circulated incident in KwaZulu-Natal Province reportedly showed a Ghanaian legal resident being confronted, asked to prove his legal status, and told to leave South Africa and “fix his country.”
Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa described such conduct as unacceptable, stressing that it undermines the dignity and rights of law-abiding residents.
He also raised concerns over reports suggesting rising tensions in affected areas, with some foreign nationals allegedly being advised to remain indoors for their safety.
While no deaths or injuries have been recorded in the latest incidents, the Minister referenced past episodes of xenophobic violence in South Africa that resulted in loss of life and property, warning against any recurrence.
He emphasised that Ghana and South Africa share long-standing historical and fraternal ties rooted in solidarity during the anti-apartheid struggle.
Ghana has therefore formally protested and called for immediate measures to ensure the protection of its citizens and other foreign nationals, including stronger security interventions and guarantees that such incidents will not be repeated.
In response, the Acting High Commissioner acknowledged Ghana’s concerns and assured that the South African government is actively addressing the situation.
He noted that law enforcement agencies are monitoring developments and working to restore calm while holding those responsible accountable.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated its commitment to safeguarding Ghanaians abroad and pledged continued diplomatic engagement to ensure their safety and protection.
