A fresh wave of concern has emerged over illegal mining activities in the Atewa Forest Reserve after a social media post alleged that “galamseyers” have invaded the protected area, setting up makeshift camps deep within the forest and operating without restraint.
The post, which was shared by Edem Srem Sai Afrikanticha, describes a troubling scene in which illegal miners have reportedly built tents in the middle of the forest, raising fears about the scale of encroachment and the potential damage to one of Ghana’s most important ecological zones.
While the claims are yet to be independently verified, they echo growing warnings from environmental groups and stakeholders who say illegal mining activities in the Atewa landscape are becoming more organised and entrenched.
Recent reports indicate that some miners have established semi-permanent camps within the forest, allowing them to operate continuously, often beyond the reach of routine patrols. These operations have been linked to deforestation, land degradation, and pollution of vital water sources.

The Atewa Forest Reserve, located in the Eastern Region, is a globally significant biodiversity area and a major source of key rivers, making its protection critical to both environmental sustainability and water security.
Authorities have, in recent weeks, stepped up enforcement efforts. Joint operations involving the Forestry Commission and other stakeholders have led to arrests and the destruction of illegal mining equipment and structures within parts of the forest.
Despite these crackdowns, the persistence of illegal miners continues to raise alarm, with advocacy groups calling for stronger and more sustained intervention, including tighter security presence and long-term monitoring systems.
The latest social media claims have further intensified public concern, with many Ghanaians demanding urgent action to prevent what could become irreversible damage to one of the country’s last remaining upland evergreen forests.
