@Mt Everest, some of these so-called experts are of as much use as a condom with a fat hole in it. The question is: did Ghana export anything when the cedis was at par with the dollar during Kufour's era.
There are certain things we can agree on ,,such as your clear, lucid and coherent comment which actually put us on the same page.
I did ask Google whether our export fell after the redenonmation in 2007, when the cedi was at par with the dollar?
Read the response. Thank you!
No, Ghana's exports did not fall dramatically immediately after the cedi was redenominated in July 2007. The redenomination was a cosmetic change (10,000 old cedis = 1 new Ghana cedi) meant to simplify accounting, not an economic devaluation. Following 2007, the economy continued to grow, aided by oil production startup and consistent commodity demand.
Key details:
Purpose: The 2007 redenomination was intended to remove four zeros to facilitate transactions, reduce high cash handling, and make the currency more manageable.
Export Performance: Export performance is more closely linked to commodity prices (cocoa, gold, oil) and production capacity rather than the redenomination itself.
Currency Stability: While the new Cedi (
) initially maintained a relatively stable rate against the dollar (around 1:1 in 2007), it has faced significant devaluation over the following decades due to inflation and economic factors, often affecting import costs rather than causing a sharp drop in exports.

Cedi was never at par with the dollar at kuffour’s time- don’t be silly- it was re denominated- it does not make the two values the same.

Which country on earth since creation has developed by embarking on massive imports rather than a stronger & powerful local currency backed by high volume of local and domestic production?
High imports produce high unemployment rate, and high exports means low unemployment rate.
We export to rake in some cash, and we import to expense some cash, so why is he coming out with such an outrageous analysis?

The financial troubles Cocobod finds itself is not entirely due to the world market price, the artificial strength of the cedi is a factor,Cocobod fixed the producer price and expenditure budget based on Ghc15.00/$1.00 then BAM the cedi appreciates toGhc10/$1.00,the cedi equivalent of the export earnings of Cocobod like all other exporters reduced by 30.33%, the cedi on steroids has serious ramifications but is being pursued for propaganda reasons,it is creating employment to foreign countries whilst killing local industries, that is all the economist is telling us,insulting him means you're stark illiterate in economics and prone to swallowing any bullshit thrown at you by NDC propagandists.

A few years ago, the Ghana Cedi to the US Dollar was Ghc0.98 to the US$. So how could the current Ghc11.00 to the US$ rate be interested to be a stronger Ghana Cedi. Consider some comparative figures: the UAE currency has maintained its value over the last 30 or more year at Dhs3.66 to the US$. The variation in the case of other countries have a range up to 30% and the like.
Sadly the cedi has plummeted from Ghc0.98 to a height of Ghc17.00 US$1.00
So the cedi is just simply recovering and not getting stronger.
Go back to school.

If you don’t understand something at least now we have ChatGPT and the likes, go and use it to learn some knowledge. Instead of insulting the guy go and read what he actually said and critically think about it. He said an appreciating currency hurts exports which he is right and government should help support these exporters. The economy of a country can’t just be based on importing things.

I will say the opposite. The guy has been very good and says things as they are. Nothing he is saying here his not worth saying. Our cedi has appreciated- it is a very good thing but export is struggling - yes - so? That is the way it goes. Rather have a strong cedi than a weak one when inflation goes to the roof. Now what we have to do is maintain the cedi’s value so exports can rise and maintain. It is the fluctuations of the cedi that is the issue- once we can maintain it we are good to go. Kudos to President Mahama and you team.

Other sources for foreign exchange is Cocoa and rubber which we export. Stronger cedi means less income for Cocoa and rubber farmers & we all know what Cocoa farmers going through now. Many of Cocoa and rubber farmers are destroying and selling lands to galamseyers. So instead of increasing rubber and cocoa farms to support foreign exchange generations & the cedi shd the gold price drop it is the opposite.
Question we shd all be asking ourselves is what is the country’s plan/strategy to sustain positive things we are seeing now shd the gold price drop.
