The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has intensified its support for 32-year-old Harriet Amuzu as her domestic abuse case progresses through the courts.

The ministry has reaffirmed its commitment to her safety, recovery and pursuit of justice.

The Ministry said it acted promptly following reports of the abuse last year, leading to Amuzu’s rescue and the initiation of legal proceedings against the suspect.

According to a report by metrotvonline.com on April 12, 2026, the Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Agnes Naa Momo Lartey, has personally engaged the survivor, assuring her of continued protection and support.

Investigations into the case have been completed, and the suspect has been formally charged, with the matter currently before the court.

Beyond the legal process, the Ministry indicated it is providing ongoing assistance to help Amuzu rebuild her life, including psychosocial counselling, guidance and livelihood support aimed at restoring her independence.

“Our responsibility does not end at rescue. We are committed to walking with survivors through their recovery journey, ensuring they are safe, supported and empowered to rebuild their lives,” the Minister said.

Background

The case attracted widespread public attention after Amuzu alleged that she was subjected to a violent attack by her estranged husband at Ofankor.

She recounted that she had travelled to meet him after he claimed their youngest child was seriously ill, only to discover the claim was false.

According to her, the situation turned violent upon her arrival.

Amuzu alleged she was accused of infidelity and assaulted, including being beaten with a stick and subjected to other forms of abuse.

She further claimed she was threatened and prevented from seeing her children.

She said a neighbour later intervened, but the ordeal continued after the individual left.

The suspect, identified as John Odartey Lamptey, has been charged with physical assault under the Domestic Violence Act.

Two relatives, Louis Odartey Lamptey and Grace Kushie Lamptey, have also been charged with conspiracy to commit a crime after they allegedly threatened a tenant believed to have recorded the incident.

The Ministry has assured it will continue to support Amuzu while ensuring justice is pursued, as part of broader efforts to protect survivors of gender-based violence.
