There has been a shortage of ginger on the market in recent times, leading to an astronomical price increase.
A sack of ginger, which previously sold for between GH¢200 and GH¢300, now sells for about GH¢2,500.
This worrying trend has prompted ginger farmers to call on the government for support, as they are harvesting very little produce.
Reacting to the situation, the Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, John Dumelo, disclosed that the low harvest can be attributed to an outbreak of disease.
In a TikTok video shared by Bit Dorla, Dumelo explained that this strange ginger disease has affected farmers over the past two years. He assured that the government is working assiduously to find a solution so both farmers and consumers can heave a sigh of relief.

He said, “There is a strange ginger disease that has affected farmers in the last two years, which is why ginger has become expensive. Most farmers, when they harvest, get very little produce.”
“Ginger that used to sell for GH¢200 or GH¢300 per sack now costs GH¢2,000 to GH¢2,500. At the ministry, we are working to find an antidote to this disease so that ginger production can continue and prices can come down.”
For individuals considering venturing into ginger farming, the Deputy Agric Minister cautioned that this is not the right time to make such an investment.
He urged young entrepreneurs to be patient until the problem is resolved and the ginger business recovers.
