Apart from those wanting "befitting" burial for their dead or indulge in stupid display of wealth as in Akan areas, when people leave their dead in the mortuaries, it is solely to find cash for little such as coffins and reception, most of which I believe, is a crazy tradition. Christians however, never bury within just a day or two.
In my area, people are buried as early as third or fourth days following the persons' passing away.
