A man identified as William Nana Nkumsah, an ex-convict who served 11 years in prison, has recounted his experience, alleging that he was framed, arrested, tortured, and abused by some individuals, including officers of the Ghana Police Service, in 2015.
According to him, the incident began after he purchased a Volkswagen Passat from a woman in Cape Coast.
He said he travelled there with GH¢18,000 as part payment for the vehicle, which had been valued at GH¢36,000.
In an interview with Kay B Media, he explained that both parties agreed he would pay the remaining balance within two weeks, after which he would receive the car’s documents.
He added that the seller permitted him to take possession of the vehicle immediately after paying half of the agreed amount.
However, he said events took a different turn while he was driving the car from the Central Region to Accra.
According to him, he was intercepted at Kasoa by two men who claimed that their sister, whom she bought the car from, had reported the vehicle as stolen.
The individuals, believed to be relatives of the seller, subsequently involved the police, leading to his arrest.
Nkumsah further alleged that the same woman he had paid for the vehicle later backed the accusation against him, claiming he had hijacked the car at gunpoint and formally lodged a complaint.
“When I first met the woman, she was strong and fit. But by the time she came to the police station, she had bandages all over her body. She claimed that when I came to purchase the car, I took her into the bush at gunpoint, assaulted her, threw her out, and drove off with the car. She hadn’t even finished her account when the police started beating me,” he narrated.
He maintained that he was innocent and said he was subjected to severe mistreatment while in police custody at Kasoa.
According to him, he was detained at the police station and allegedly tortured by some officers over a crime he insists he did not commit.
He was later arraigned before the court and, in 2015, sentenced to 11 years’ imprisonment.
