The Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry has stepped in to stop an impending increase in the price of sachet water, assuring Ghanaians that prices will remain stable for now.

The intervention follows discussions between the Ministry, the Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association (GPMA), and the National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers (NASPAWAP).

Sachet Water Prices: Government targets local inputs to cut costs

In a statement issued after the meeting, the Ministry disclosed that the price adjustment, which producers had planned to implement from Monday, April 6, 2026, has been put on hold after engagements with key industry players.

“Consumers can continue to purchase sachet water at the current price,” the statement said.

The Ministry highlighted that the move forms part of efforts to shield consumers from sudden increases in the cost of essential commodities. It also acknowledged the role played by GPMA and NASPAWAP in agreeing to suspend the increment, describing the decision as a demonstration of cooperation aimed at maintaining affordability and market stability.

Sachet water remains a major source of drinking water for many households across Ghana, making any pricing changes a matter of public concern.

According to the Ministry, the decision is intended to ease the burden on consumers amid ongoing cost-of-living pressures, while also ensuring the market remains stable.

The statement further indicated that the government will continue engaging stakeholders to address key concerns within the sachet water production chain, particularly rising input costs and operational challenges faced by producers.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with industry players to develop long-term solutions that balance business sustainability with consumer protection.

Observers within the industry say the development underscores the government’s growing focus on monitoring essential goods and intervening when necessary to prevent market disruptions.
