Kofi Tonto, an aide to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, raised serious concerns about the escalating cost of the Accra-Kumasi dualization project.

Tonto revealed on Joy News that during the NPP’s time in office, a significant portion of the project, including 4 bypasses, was awarded at a cost of GHC 2 billion and 64% of the work was completed.

However, according to Tonto, the remaining 34% of the project, which is currently under the responsibility of the Ministry of Roads and Highways, is now set to cost a staggering GHC 6 billion. That’s three times more than the original budget.

Tonto didn’t mince words as he questioned the logic behind this huge increase, stating, “You read it right; the remaining 36% will cost Ghana three times more than the original cost.” His comments come amidst growing concerns over budget overruns in major infrastructure projects across the country.
