The Administrator of the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), Paul Adjei, has sent a clear message to contractors working on projects funded by the scheme: deliver quality work or be prepared to face the consequences.
According to a report on myjoyonline.com, Adjei expressed concern over what he described as a worrying decline in the standard of some completed projects.
He cautioned that the Fund would no longer tolerate substandard delivery, stressing that contractors must prioritise value for money in every project they undertake.
GETFund, established under Act 581 in 2000, plays a crucial role in supporting Ghana’s education sector.
Funded largely through a 2.5 percent VAT levy, it provides infrastructure, teaching and learning materials, scholarships for brilliant but needy students, and financing for key national education programmes.
Adjei noted that while the Fund continues to invest heavily in improving educational facilities across the country, the quality of execution must match the level of investment.
He urged contractors to move away from profit-driven shortcuts and instead focus on delivering durable and impactful projects that will stand the test of time.
“Ghanaian taxpayers make significant sacrifices before earning their income, and it is from these same resources that government funds development projects. They therefore deserve nothing short of quality work,” he emphasised.
To address the issue, Adjei announced the formation of a special strategic monitoring team that will inspect both ongoing and completed GETFund projects nationwide.
The team will ensure strict adherence to project specifications, with any contractor who falls short facing sanctions.
Beyond infrastructure, he also highlighted the importance of the GETFund Scholarship Scheme, encouraging students, especially those from rural and underserved communities, to take advantage of the opportunity.
He assured that steps are being taken to make the application process more transparent and inclusive.
As part of efforts to strengthen communication and public trust, Adjei revealed that a Corporate Affairs Department has been set up within GETFund.
The new unit will serve as a bridge between the Fund, the media, and the general public, helping to address concerns and provide timely information about its operations.
He further called on journalists to engage more actively with the Fund by visiting its offices and seeking accurate information to support informed and balanced reporting.
