Legendary Ghanaian footballer, Rev Osei Kofi has cautioned against the hiring of a foreign coach for the Black Stars as the Ghana Football Association (GFA) embarks on its search for a new head coach.

He stated that all trophies won by the national team, particularly the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), were achieved under local coaches, an indication of their competence.

The AFCON winner emphasised that no foreign coach has ever won a trophy as Black Stars head coach, hence local coaches should be given serious consideration.

Speaking in an interview with Citi Sports, Rev Osei Kofi cited the late CK Gyamfi as an example, noting that he led the team to multiple AFCON titles.

“In those days, CK Gyamfi was the first Black coach to take over from the foreigners, and since then it has been Blacks. All AFCON titles were won under local coaches. The 1963, 1965, and 1978 AFCON titles were won by Gyamfi. Foreign coaches haven’t won any trophy for Ghana. If we bring a foreigner, we will spend more money, which is not helping us,” he said.

Rev Osei Kofi further blamed the inconsistent performances of the team on poor coaching despite the abundance of talent.

“We are a gifted country; God has blessed us with football talents. As of now, we have players but we don’t have a team. A team should be united, but in this case, it is individuals playing,” he added.
