I will resign if Mahama fails to sign anti-LGBTQ+ bill after passage - Sukparu

Sukparu says he will resign as MP should the president not sign the anti-LGBTQ+ bill Sukparu says he will resign as MP should the president not sign the anti-LGBTQ+ bill

The Deputy Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovations, Mohammed Adams Sukparu, has issued an ultimatum, stating that he will resign as Member of Parliament for Sissala West if President John Dramani Mahama fails to assent to the anti-LGBTQ+ bill after its passage.

Speaking on Channel One TV on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, Sukparu expressed strong confidence in the president’s stance on the controversial legislation, insisting that Mahama would not hesitate to sign the bill once it is passed by Parliament.

He emphasised his trust in the president’s principles and urged the public to be patient as the legislative process unfolds.

“Knowing President Mahama and the kind of person he is, he is a very principled person. Wait for the bill to pass through Parliament. Just give him three days. If he is not able to sign the bill, then me, I can tell you that you can hold me accountable,” he stated.

The deputy minister further assured Ghanaians that the president respects the will of the people and the role of Parliament in the law-making process.

He explained that the bill is currently undergoing the necessary parliamentary procedures.

“If the bill is passed, be rest assured that His Excellency the President, he respects the people of Ghana, he knows currently the bill is before Parliament, that is the representatives of the people in Parliament,” he explained.

Sukparu also indicated that lawmakers are carefully scrutinising the bill to ensure its passage in line with democratic processes.

He reiterated his firm commitment to resign should the president fail to assent to the bill after it is approved by Parliament.

“We are currently going through stage by stage to ensure that that bill is passed. And I can assure you that if the bill is passed and President Mahama does not sign the bill to become a law, me, Mohammed, I'm going to tell you that I will resign as a Member of Parliament for the good people of Sissala West. That I can assure you,” he assured.

The Sissala West MP also rejected suggestions that President John Dramani Mahama may take a different position on the bill, insisting that the president has consistently been clear on the matter.

He noted that the president has always maintained that the bill should be handled through democratic means.

“I am telling you that President Mahama spoke passionately against this and anybody can’t say he is taking a different stance. That is not what he said. He said the bill will be handled democratically, which means that the bill is currently before the people's representatives, which is Ghana's Parliament. That is the democratic way. People are speaking to it,” he stated.

Sukparu went further to contrast Mahama’s approach with that of a former president, accusing the latter of failing to act decisively when given the opportunity.

“And I am telling you, unlike His Excellency, the former president, when he had the opportunity to prove to the people of this country that he was against it, he chose to use the law to frustrate the system,” he said.

He doubled down on his ultimatum, stressing his personal conviction and readiness to stake his political career on the matter.

“And I am telling you that when this bill is passed, President Mahama does not sign this bill, I, Mohammed Adam Sukparu, the Member of Parliament for Sissala West will resign as a Member of Parliament because I know that the president is against such.

Ghana's credibility at stake in LGBTQ policy debate

“I know the president is a true Christian, I know the president, a son of a Yagbonwura, a young gentleman, will not on any day even think twice when it comes to something like this. And so for me, I can put my position on the line,” he concluded.
