Despite the criticisms and mixed reactions following the Black Stars’ two defeats in the international friendlies in March 2026, some players showcased their potential.
The Black Stars lost 5–1 to Austria in their first friendly, a performance that was nothing to write home about. However, they quickly recovered to put up an impressive display against Germany, even though they eventually lost 2–1.
These two games gave several players the opportunity to prove a point and make a case for their inclusion in the squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and some delivered brilliantly.

Derrick Arthur Kohn
The Union Berlin defender lasted the entire duration of the game against Germany at the MHF Arena in Stuttgart. He was solid both defensively and offensively, and assisted Abdul Fatawu Issahaku’s equalizer in the 70th minute.
The 27-year-old’s performance in his third appearance for the Black Stars drew widespread attention from Ghanaians, who flocked to social media to single him out for praise despite the team’s defeat.
Derrick Köhn performed well against the four-time world champions, being the second top rated Ghanaian player in the game after goalkeeper Benjamin Asare.
Prince Kwabena Adu
The Viktoria Plzen forward showed glimpses of the quality of a striker who could lead the attack for the team at the World Cup if he maintains and improves his performances.
He demonstrated the ability to find space in tight areas, play comfortably with the ball at his feet, and remain calm in the final third during tense moments, giving the team flexibility in attack.
Although many of his powerful shots in the two games failed to hit the target, he showed confidence by continuing to shoot even under pressure.
If he avoids injury and sharpens his finishing to become more clinical, he could be the main man to lead the Black Stars’ attack.
Caleb Yirenkyi
Caleb Yirenkyi delivered an impressive performance against Germany after a tough outing against Austria.
He started the game in midfield, helping the team retain possession and control the tempo, though the Black Stars struggled in the early stages.
As the Germans pressed hard during the first 15 minutes, Yirenkyi was quickly shifted back to the right-back position he has often occupied for the team.
He played a pivotal role in helping Ghana withstand the pressure, blocking shots and making crucial clearances. His defensive awareness and ability to win possession without committing fouls were outstanding.
