Former Black Stars striker, Asamoah Gyan has said that he is expecting a competitive game between Ghana and England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The four-time African champions, who are making their fifth appearance at the World Cup, have been paired in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia.

The Black Stars will take on the Three Lions in their second Group L match of the tournament on June 23.

Speaking at the official unveiling of Ghana's national team jersey in New York ahead of the tournament this summer, Gyan acknowledged England’s strength but insists he expects a competitive game between the two sides.

"We are playing against England, we are in the same group. You know, on paper, England, of course, is one of the best in the world right now," Gyan said.

"You know, but people are optimistic about that game. To play against England. I'm not thinking about playing England; I just want Ghana to qualify from the group stage to go to the next stage of the competition, so we'll see what happens. But Ghana against England is going to be a very, very good game," he added.

The Black Stars will kick off their campaign against Panama on June 17 before wrapping up their group games against Croatia on June 27.

Asamoah Gyan has fond memories against England, having scored a late equaliser in a 1-1 international friendly draw in 2011 after Andy Carroll had given the Three Lions the lead.
