Suhum, Eastern Region – A modern Children’s Medical and Wellness Centre has been officially commissioned at Suhum Government Hospital, marking a significant milestone in pediatric healthcare delivery in the Eastern Region of Ghana.

Funded by the international NGO Love Without Walls, led by Dr Hartford Dawson, the $340,000 project was inspired by Dr Dawson’s 2014 visit to the hospital, where he witnessed the challenges facing child healthcare in the area. Officials describe the new facility as the first of its kind in the region.

At the commissioning ceremony, Medical Superintendent Dr Ahmed Tijani Sulemana highlighted the urgency of investing in child health, citing preventable diseases, malnutrition, and neonatal complications as major concerns.

He emphasized that access to quality pediatric care is “not a luxury but a life-saving necessity,” noting that the new centre will reduce congestion, improve care standards, and support the Ghana Health Service’s strategic priorities for maternal and child health.

Suhum Municipal Chief Executive, Lydia Ohenewa, called the project a “significant milestone” for the municipality, praising the collaboration between local authorities, the Ghana Health Service, and development partners.

She reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to expanding healthcare access through further community health projects.

Frank Asiedu Bekoe, Member of Parliament for Suhum, hailed the initiative as a model of partnership and shared vision, emphasizing that the facility will ease pressure on existing infrastructure.

Paramount Chief Osabarima Kofi Ayeh I also expressed his gratitude to the donors, describing the centre as a lasting legacy for future generations.

Dr Hartford Dawson underscored the role of faith and service in the project’s success and pledged ongoing support, while urging proper maintenance to preserve its long-term impact. Health officials also appealed for additional support in critical areas, including ambulances, maternity block renovations, and medical equipment.

The newly commissioned centre will serve Suhum and surrounding communities, providing improved access to specialized pediatric care and contributing to better health outcomes for children across the region.

The event brought together government officials, healthcare professionals, traditional leaders, development partners, and community members, all united in the shared mission of advancing child health.
