Senegal’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory has sparked fresh controversy after head coach Pape Thiaw reportedly moved the tournament trophy to a military base.
The move comes amid ongoing tensions with Morocco over the title following CAF’s controversial decision.
Reports indicate the trophy is now under armed guard at a secure facility, with soldiers permitted to take photographs alongside it, a gesture widely interpreted as Senegal asserting its claim to the championship.
The situation arose after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) overturned Senegal’s on-field triumph in the final, awarding Morocco a technical victory on Tuesday, March 17, 2026.
The ruling has provoked outrage across Senegal, with officials and fans rejecting what they view as an administrative reversal of the country’s earned success.

Senegalese football authorities have reportedly appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), insisting the title was won on merit and should not be decided off the pitch.
Many, including Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly, have openly criticised CAF’s decision, while federation officials emphasise that the trophy should not be surrendered until the legal process concludes.
