While some Ghanaians have drawn negative attention to the country in the United States (US) through involvement in crimes, including romance scams, a handful are putting Ghana on the map by making significant strides in their fields.
One such Ghanaian is a young man named Barack Dodoo, who is a Senior Community Partnerships Manager for Intergovernmental Affairs in the New York Mayor's Office.
Barack, who comes from humble beginnings, hails from the capital town of Ghana’s Upper West Region, Wa.
Like Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Barack attended Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, where he graduated top of his class with a perfect 4.0 GPA in 2024. His excellent performance earned him the Presidential Award and the distinction of being Valedictorian at his graduation ceremony.
In addition to his role at the New York Mayor’s Office, he is also pursuing a Master’s degree at Columbia University in International Affairs, specialising in defence analysis, intelligence, and military defence.
In a recent interview shared on social media, Barack narrated how he landed the job at the New York Mayor’s Office.
He indicated that the Mayor’s Office approached him with a job offer when he travelled back to Ghana after his graduation, owing to his sterling academic performance, which made him feel special.
“It made me feel that all my hard work, the time I’ve invested in building myself, and the confidence I’ve had in myself is actually coming to fruition. I was very surprised. In fact, I was in my mom's living room back in Wa in 2024 when I got the call,” he said.
He encouraged young Ghanaian to believe in themselves and work hard to achieve their dreams no matter their backgrounds.
