The Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Ahmed Ibrahim, on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, has paid a Ramadan courtesy call on several Muslim groups and communities across the country.

The visit formed part of efforts by the government to show solidarity with Muslims observing the holy month of Ramadan.

During the visits on March 16, 2026, the ministry, on behalf of the President, presented food items to support Muslims undertaking the month-long fast.

According to the minister, the gesture was meant to assist Muslim communities as they observe the spiritual period.

“Our Muslim brothers and sisters are fasting, so as a country we needed to support them with some food items. Today we came here to present items such as rice and sugar to them,” Ibrahim said.

He explained that the delegation had visited several Muslim groups and leaders, including the office of the Osman Nuhu Sharubutu.

“All that we are doing is to let them know that the President appreciates what they are doing to support the country. It is necessary to support those who have begun a good work, so we came to encourage them,” he added.

Ibrahim also addressed controversies surrounding reports that the ministry intended to register churches, mosques and shrines.

He clarified that President Mahama had not issued any directive for such an exercise and that the matter was never part of the ruling government’s manifesto.

According to him, the issue rather emerged during discussions in a parliamentary session concerning the growing number of churches, mosques and shrines in the country.

The National Chief Imam, Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, expressed appreciation to President Mahama for the gesture. He also prayed for continued peace and stability in Ghana.

The Chief Imam further prayed for divine intervention for nations around the world experiencing uncertainty.

The minister and his delegation visited several Muslim institutions and leaders, including, Ghana Muslim Mission national headquarters, the National Chief Imam, Muslim Mission Ghana among others.

Leaders of the various Muslim groups including Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission Ghana, led by Ameer and Missionary-In-Charge Alhajj Maulvi Noor Mohammed Bin Salih, the National Imam of the Shia Community in Ghana, Sheikh Abubakar Ahmed Kamaldeen among others thanked the government for the support and called for continued unity and peaceful coexistence among Ghanaians.
