Cocoa farmers in Ashanti threaten demo over possible price cut

Cocoa farmers in Ghana’s Ashanti Region have warned of a massive demonstration against the government if there is any further reduction in cocoa prices.

Speaking to OTEC News on Wednesday, farmers in the Ahafo Ano South East District expressed frustration over alleged plans to cut the cocoa price.

They cited consistent neglect by the government and industry players as a major factor worsening their livelihoods.

The farmers’ threat follows hints from the Minority in Parliament about a possible price reduction amid declining cocoa production in the area.

“We are calling on them to maintain the current GH¢2,485 price per 64kg bag. Any further reduction will force us onto the streets,” a farmer said.

“We are already struggling with the current reduction and cannot cope with another cut,” they stressed.
