Government spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu has revealed that the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has moved to block large sums of money from the accounts of Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako.

In an interview on JoyNews monitored by GhanaWeb on March 10, 2026, Ofosu noted that about GH¢50 million belonging to Chairman Wontumi has been frozen.

He further explained that similar actions have been taken in other high-profile cases, including those involving Kwabena Adu-Boahene and Gifty Oware-Mensah. According to him, the state has so far frozen about GH¢1.5 billion in total.

“For instance, in Chairman Wontumi’s case alone, close to GH¢50 million in his account has been frozen.

“Similar figures are involved in the case of the former Signals Bureau boss, Adu-Boahene. The same applies to the National Service case and many others. For now, what authorities can do is to freeze the funds, and they have done so. In total, about GH¢1.5 billion has been frozen,” he said.

Here's when court will rule on Wontumi's submission of no case

The Member of Parliament for Abura Asebu-Kwamankese additionally noted that the state cannot recover such assets outright until the courts determine that they were obtained illegally.

“They will not be able to recover the funds until the persons involved have been convicted by a court, which would then grant the legal mandate to recover whatever the court finds to have been stolen.”

Meanwhile, Chairman Wontumi is scheduled to appear before the court on March 16, 2026, for a final ruling on whether he will be required to open his defence or be discharged in the Samreboi galamsey case, following his submission of a no-case-to-answer motion.
